Romantic Reflections - Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra

Saturday, March 4, 2023 - 8:00pm Temple Theatre Saginaw, MI Romanticism in music took many shapes, including a big, rich orchestral sound, lush harmonies, and extremes of musical expression. All can be found in tonight’s selections. Tchaikovsky’s music opens the program with the Polonaise from the opera Eugene Onegin. Typical of Tchaikovsky’s dances, the Polonaise is a tuneful, catchy dance, played by a large Romantic orchestra. A style of music called Strurm and Drang [Storm and Stress] developed in the 18th-century became a precursor to 19th century Romanticism.

Music to Celebrate: A Tribute to Black Composers

Saturday, February 4, 2023 - 7:30pm Temple Theatre Saginaw, MI Over the last century, some Black composers have found their place in European-based classical music, while others have been at the forefront of creating distinctively Black styles of American music such as blues, jazz, and Motown. Tonight’s program honors composers from all these traditions. Julia Perry’s Short Piece for Orchestra (1943) is full of exciting musical contrasts. Orchestral arrangements of popular standards follow, one group by Duke Ellington, another by Louis Armstrong, and a final set of Motown songs.

It turns out that the Livonia Symphony has an agreement with Livonia Public Access Television that allows them to put concert video online. Here’s the video from my concert with them on March 15, 2014. I enter at 13:00, and perform Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in Eb, then Leroy Anderson’s Trumpeter’s Lullaby, and finally team up with LSO Principal Robert Hawkins on Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Trumpets and Orchestra. Haydn Trumpet Concerto with the Livonia Symphony

I am excited to announce that I’m going to be the featured soloist on the upcoming Livonia Symphony Orchestra Chamber Classics concert, March 15th 2014 at 4:00pm. Notable Upcoming Performances

I have a couple of performances coming up in the very near future that I feel merit extra attention here on my website. The first will take place on Saturday, January 19th, at The Whiting in Flint, MI. Notable about this performance is the programming of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7. In my 17 years with the Flint Symphony, this is the first time the orchestra has performed any Bruckner work, and it’s also the first time I’ve ever performed a Bruckner Symphony as Principal.

My second season as Principal Trumpet with the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra begins with an exciting program. WSU Faculty Recital

In case you can’t make it to Ann Arbor to hear the premier of James Nissen’s Concerto for Trumpet and Large WindEnsemble (or even if you can!), I’ll be teaming up with fellow brass faculty member Gary Hellick for a joint faculty recital in the Schaver Music Recital Hall, Old Main, at Wayne State University. We’ve put together a great program of modern music for trumpet and trombone. There’s lots of variety on this program, with something to please any brass afficionado!

Heroes, Legends and Empires - WORLD PREMIERE

On Sunday, March 6th, I will be performing the world premiere of the Concerto for Trumpet and Large Wind Ensemble by James Nissen. The performance will take place at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor at 2:00 pm as part of the Ann Arbor Concert Band’s performance titled “Heroes, Legends and Empires.” This performance is the culmination of a long collaboration between myself and the composer, James Nissen. I first heard Jim’s music several years ago when his Requiem Mass was programmed as part of a concert in which I was playing.

An American Valentine

It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over, but here we are at August 19th. It’s been a great summer, and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying my break from the so-called “daily grind.” Not that my daily grind is so bad, mind you. We’ll be starting 2010 with a bang in Flint this month with a performance of Gustav Mahler’s seventh Symphony. It is always a joy to perform Mahler’s works. The trumpet parts in his symphonies are well-written and as musically gratifying as they are challenging. Come on out for an exciting evening! Handel's Messiah in Northville

I will be performing Handel’s Messiah several times throughout the Metro-Detroit area this holiday season. The first of these has become a holiday tradition for me, as I’ve performed this production all but one of the last 15 years. This performance will take place at First Presbyterian Church in beautiful downtown Northville. OK, so bash might be too strong a word, but we are doing a really cool concert with tons of music by Bach, much of it featuring very big trumpet parts. Plus, I get to stand up front and center for a solo on Cantata 51, with my friend and colleage, soprano Karen Roberts. If you like watching trumpet players sweat it out in the hot seat with lots of high, exposed playing, this is the concert for you!

Symphonie Fantastique

Our February subscription concert with the Flint Symphony will include the famous Symphonie Fantastique, by Hector Berlioz, among other pieces. A special trumpet note: We’re including the cornet solo in the second movement of the symphony, and I’ll be playing it (and most likely the rest of the piece) on my recently acquired circa 1899 Boston cornet. This instrument produces a really unique sound and is exactly the kind of instrument that would have been in use at the time the piece was written.

This time, it’s a performance of West Side Story at Chippeway Valley High School, in Clinton Township, MI (which coincidentally is the town I lived in when I attended High School, far too many years ago).

For our first concert of 2009, the Flint Symphony Orchestra will be performing Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. As a trumpeter, performing any Mahler symphony is always a treat, and I’ve been fortunate to perform nearly all of his symphonic works during my time with the FSO.The fifth holds a special place as one of the most important orchestral trumpet parts in the repertoire. I’ve wanted to perform it since the very early days of my musical career, so I’m very excited about this performance.

During the month of November I will once again be returning to the pit at the Detroit Opera House, performing in Michigan Opera Theater’s production of Giacomo Puccini’s masterpiece opera, Madame Butterfly. Bijou Orchestra

I’ll be returning to the stage of Bay City’s State Theatre to perform with the Bijou Orchestra in a concert titled “Gay Paree.“Â From the Bijou Orchestra website: Feast on the music of a great city. Led Zeppelin

For the second year, I will perform with the orchestra backing up the official tour band of Led Zeppelin to present The Music of Led Zeppelin: A Rock Symphony. This concert will be held at DTE Energy Music Theater (or, as all of us still call it, Pine Knob). The band they put together for this last year was outstanding. They’re not the original Led Zeppelin members, but they sound great.

Stone Soup

Gretchko Elementary School in West Bloomfield holds a fun concert every spring, where First Grade students perform a musical created just for them. This yearâ€™s musical is based on the Brothers GrimmÂ tale Stone Soup. This is a pretty unique production for an elementary school, in that they bring in professional musicians and really do a good job with production values. I’llÂ join the orchestra to play music from Pucciniâ€™s Turandot and other classics.

I’ll be performing Terry Everson’s Idea Number 24 with the MSU Trumpet Ensemble, under the direction of Richard Illman. This performance will take place as part of the “trumpet preludes” series during the International Trumpet Guild’s annual conference at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts, in Banff, Alberta, Canada. We’ll be closing out our subscription season in Flint this month with a performance of Debussy’s La Mer. The program was originally set to include selections from The Discovery of Brazil, by Villa-Lobos, but a snafu with the music publisher has made that impossible, and it’s been bumped to next season. Strauss - Alpine Symphony

The Flint Symphony Orchestra kicks off 2008 with a bang, performing Richard Strauss’ An Alpine Symphony. This is a great piece of music with lots of excellent brass writing. Shostakovich!

I’ll be sitting in with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra this week, playing Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7, the “Leningrad” Symphony. It’s been a long time since I’ve performed with the DSO and I’m really looking forward to making music with this group of amazing musicians. Bach!

On Friday, January 11 at 7:30pm, I’ll be performing cantatas 1, 5 and 6 of J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248). 1 and 6 both have huge trumpet parts, which I’ll be playing on my (relatively) new Schilke P5-4. Other trumpeters in the section will be Kiri Tollekson and Natalie Bruno. It may seem odd to perform the Christmas Oratorio in January, but the piece actually contains music related not just to Christmas, but also to the New Year and Epiphany, so it is relevant, after all.

MSU Alumni Band Tour

We’ve just returned from a whirlwind tour of the Canadian Rockies with the Michigan State University Alumni Band.While I’m not technically an alum just yet, I’m close enough and they asked Lynne and I to come along as principal trumpet and oboe with the group. Early in the trip, which included Calgary, Lake Louise, Banff, Kamloops and Vancouver, we performed at the Chateau Lake Louise Hotel (where we also stayed the night).

I’ll be performing Handel’s Royal Fireworks Music with the Toledo Symphony. From their website (Click to see it): Stefan Sanderling leads the Toledo Symphony in some of the most recognizable melodies of the Baroque era. Handelâ€™s Royal Fireworks Music has recovered from its disastrous premiere, when fireworks destroyed the outdoor stage, to become the music for many celebrations. In our second concert of the 2007-2008 season, the Flint Symphony Orchestra will perform Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony. Mahler is one of my favorite composers, and the Third Symphony contains an enormous amount of great music for trumpet, so I’m particularly excited about playing this concert. From the FSO website: Tonightâ€™s offering, the stunning Symphony No. 3 by Gustav Mahler, paints pictures of nature so vivid youâ€™ll almost see them: A slow awakening gives way to solemn chords that lead to sweet, gentle melodies.

Romantic Reflections - Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra

Saturday, March 4, 2023 - 8:00pm Temple Theatre Saginaw, MI Romanticism in music took many shapes, including a big, rich orchestral sound, lush harmonies, and extremes of musical expression. All can be found in tonight’s selections. Tchaikovsky’s music opens the program with the Polonaise from the opera Eugene Onegin. Typical of Tchaikovsky’s dances, the Polonaise is a tuneful, catchy dance, played by a large Romantic orchestra. A style of music called Strurm and Drang [Storm and Stress] developed in the 18th-century became a precursor to 19th century Romanticism.

Saturday, February 4, 2023 - 7:30pm Temple Theatre Saginaw, MI Over the last century, some Black composers have found their place in European-based classical music, while others have been at the forefront of creating distinctively Black styles of American music such as blues, jazz, and Motown. Tonight’s program honors composers from all these traditions. Julia Perry’s Short Piece for Orchestra (1943) is full of exciting musical contrasts. Orchestral arrangements of popular standards follow, one group by Duke Ellington, another by Louis Armstrong, and a final set of Motown songs.

Titled “Music and Sandwiches,” the post talks about Trevino’s experiences transitioning from music student to music professional. Much of what he says resonated strongly with me. My own career has followed a similar “slow burn” trajectory. Over the years I have done many things besides perform and teach on the trumpet. I’ve worked behind a deli counter, in a hospital billing department, at an HVAC company, a commercial real estate brokerage, book store conglomerate, and internet start-up.

Students and parents often ask me how much time every day should be spent practicing. I usually answer that as a very general rule of thumb, if you take a 30 minute lesson once a week, then you should practice at least 30 minutes every day. But that is a very generic response. Haydn Trumpet Concerto with the Livonia Symphony

I am excited to announce that I’m going to be the featured soloist on the upcoming Livonia Symphony Orchestra Chamber Classics concert, March 15th 2014 at 4:00pm. I’ll be performing the Trumpet Concerto by Josef Haydn, as well as the Concerto for Two Trumpets by Antonio Vivaldi (teaming up with LSO Principal Trumpeter Robert Hawkins).

I just read a fascinating article in Boston Magazine about recent percussion auditions for the Boston Symphony. This article captures very well the atmosphere, and to me more interestingly, the inner experience of the musicians taking part in the audition. Dr. Flegg, I presume

Yes, it’s official!!! After many, many years (nearly 8, to be exact) I am finally Dr. Mark Flegg. In May, I received my Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Michigan State University. My final lecture recital and document focused on the Sonata for Trumpet and Strings (or Piano), by Robert Bradshaw. I’ve know Robert personally, and have been very interested in his music, since I first heard about him back in 2003.

I’ve switched to a new hosting provider (the company that provides the physical computer and internet connection that house my website) and done some re-design of the website itself at the same time. It's Summertime!!

Let me start this post with a heartfelt HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY to each and every one of you!! Independence Day here in the United States!! I’ve just finished a very demanding week of performances. Â I’m very pleased to announce that I’ve accepted a part-time faculty position with Wayne State University. Beginning in the Fall semester, 2008, I’ll be teaching undergraduate and graduate trumpet students in the Department of Music, College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts. I started my college career at Wayne many years ago, and I haveÂ wonderful memories of my time there as a student. I couldn’t be more thrilled to be taking on this new opportunity.

New Host, New Look!

If you’ve visited my website in the past, then you can see for yourself that some things have changed around here! I’ve switched to a new hosting provider (the company that provides the physical computer and internet connection that house my website) and done some re-design of the website itself at the same time. There are two main reasons for the changes: My previous hosting company, iPage, wasn’t working out as well as I had hoped.

FSO - Mahler V

For our first concert of 2009, the Flint Symphony Orchestra will be performing Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. As a trumpeter, performing any Mahler symphony is always a treat, and I’ve been fortunate to perform nearly all of his symphonic works during my time with the FSO.The fifth holds a special place as one of the most important orchestral trumpet parts in the repertoire. I’ve wanted to perform it since the very early days of my musical career, so I’m very excited about this performance.

Lin Jones Photography

Over this past summer I was contacted by photographer Lin Jones to see if I would be willing to participate in her current project, “Soul Mates.” Lin is a member of the University of Michigan Photo Services staff. “Soul Mates” is a personal project of hers, in which she is exploring the relationships between musicians and their instruments through photography. I thought the project was a great idea, and I liked what I saw of Lin’s work online, so I happily agreed to be photographed.

Website Redesign!

After many weeks of work, I’ve done a complete redesign of my website. Over the past year or so I have been increasingly disappointed with PHPWebsite as the “back end” of my site. While it is a very powerful package, the documentation was so heavily geared towards programmers and hard-core site developers, I felt it would take too much time to implement any new features to the site. I also was concerned that it would be too difficult to upgrade to a new version of the software, which was a concern since my version was quite out of date, and was vulnerable to several possible security problems.

Happy 2013!

Happy New Year!! My original intent was to write a fairly large post to ring in the new year on my website. I had it all mapped out in my head… I was going to write about what it’s like to be a free-lance musician in December… the grueling schedule of holiday gigs, teaching, and the occasional family or friend gathering. I was going to write about performing in the pit for “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” an extra gig that came up which fit perfectly around my other holiday gigs.

The Great Canadian Rockies Coffee Tour

Well, my plan was to have this post published an online right away when we got back from our trip.. of course, the best intentions, etc. etc. Anyway, here it finally is! The International Trumpet Guild annual conference this year was held in Banff, Alberta, Canada. As a certified professional trumpet geek it is my duty and obligation to attend as many of these events as I can, and this was no exception.

Lunar Eclipse

Tonight we had a total lunar eclipse, and the conditions were perfect for seeing and photographing it. This is an event where the Earth passes in between the moon and the sun, leaving it in shadow. The moon appears red during the total part of the eclipse, due to light refracting through the Earth’s atmosphere. This was the first time something interesting has come along for me to photograph with my recently purchased Canon SX100 IS camera.

Over the past few years, while I was commuting back and forth to MSU in East Lansing, I came to rely on audiobooks and podcasts to keep me awake on the road. One of the very best I’ve found is RadioLab, from New York Public Radio. Hosted by Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich, each episode covers a single scientific idea.Â What makes the RadioLab podcast different (and great, in my opinion) is the way the material is covered.

Andrew Wu Glassworks

I don’t generally put posts up here that have no trumpet content, but my good friend Andrew Wu, violinist with the Michigan Opera Theatre, is exhibiting his latest blown glass creations at the 33rd Art in the Park this weekend. Art in the Park takes place every year at Shain Park in Birmingham. Proceeds from the event benefit Common Ground Sanctuary. The event runs this Saturday (15 September) from 10am to 6pm, and Sunday (16 September) from 10am to 5pm.

Relief for Tired Eyes!

The last time I had my eyes examined, the doctor said to me “Your reward for your longevity is that you get to wear these really cool glasses!” That’s a good perspective I suppose. Back in the day I could read not only off my own stand, but also the stands of my neighbors, and even people in the row in front of me. Those days are gone. Now it’s even a challenge to read my OWN music if the lighting isn’t great.

MSU Alumni Band Tour

We’ve just returned from a whirlwind tour of the Canadian Rockies with the Michigan State University Alumni Band.While I’m not technically an alum just yet, I’m close enough and they asked Lynne and I to come along as principal trumpet and oboe with the group. Early in the trip, which included Calgary, Lake Louise, Banff, Kamloops and Vancouver, we performed at the Chateau Lake Louise Hotel (where we also stayed the night).
